Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Tiffen 58WSFX12 58mm Warm Soft/FX 1/2 FilterCustomer Review: Good, for the price. Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this, along with some other Tiffen filters and I'm fairly happy with what I got.
I'd read that even "1" softeners could blur out too quickly, so a 1/2 was more useful. On a SX10IS, I'd say get a 1 or 2 or just don't use the softener.
Also, I expected to see less softening points at the center of the lens (no distortion in the middle) but they're somewhat uniform throughout the filter.
Warming is, well, warming; it makes my son and wife look like they have dark tans and makes me look like I get out in the sun occasionally rather than being a bluish white when a flash hits me . . . so it's good for that.
Build quality is good; no oddness with screwing it on, it feels substantial. Obviously, if you're in extreme conditions or a pro, there are much better options, but still, for the cash, a worthy buy.
Description of Tiffen 58WSFX12 58mm Warm Soft/FX 1/2 FilterA truly Unique filter, the Tiffen Warm Soft/FX combines the innovative diffusion technology of the Soft/FX filters with the exclusive 812 warming filter, balancing contrasting skin tones to make people look their best. This filter is available in differing strengths, the higher the number, the more dramatic effect. Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings. The ColorCore process allows total control over the color and density of Tiffen filters, and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters.
