Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Stroboframe Press-T Flash Rotating Bracket

Customer Review: A MUST for Portrait Photos
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this for Christmas (although I picked it out) to work with my Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens (mainly with Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR [Vibration Reduction] DX Lens) and Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras.

The great:
1. The design!!! I searched high and low and I love the natural motion that this bracket provides. I hold the camera and rotate the camera counter-clockwise (photographer's perspective) while still holding my finger on the shutter release as normally. This is the thing that mattered to me the most. This brand has other brackets that will rotate the flash in the other direction and the shutter release is pointing down with a camera rotation to the right (photographer's perspective). The screw to mount the camera is actually screwed safely into the bottom of the bracket, even though it has a long hole to adjust the location of the camera. It is designed well to not lose it. It also sits flush with the bottom of the bracket to not interfere with a tripod.
2. I was also very impressed by the construction. It is solid yet light-weight. It is a nice balance. The finish is a matte black that matches my camera and makes it look very professional rather than a toy. Brand and model designed to point out, so it does advertize the brand, but I like it so much, I don't mind telling my friends what it is.
3. It didn't come with the flash bracket in the picture, but I bought the Nikon 4765 SC-28 TTL 9-ft. Remote Cord and it screws right into it, so I didn't need the extra flash bracket. With the Nikon SB-600, there doesn't seem to be any extra motion needing an anti-twist bracket. I recommend at least the SB-600, since the flash itself will need to rotate (which the SB-600 does) when in "portrait" to point to the ceiling. Because I have the D40, I needed the cable. If your camera supports wireless and you don't get a cable, you will need a flash bracket to hold it (and maybe an anti-twist device as the other reviewer posted). At a local store I saw another model of this brand that included the flash mount. The retailer recommended removing the included flash mount and srewing in the hotshoe of the cable, which is how my set up resulted with this one.
4. The bracket has a cable anchor that holds the cable in the right place for the elbow. The cable is a bit long, but because it coils nicely, it wraps around nicely and took a couple of tries to find the optimal position. I did use two black thin velcro cable tie wraps (not included) to hold the cable in place so that with motion, it doesn't interfere with the bracket and that the tip that mounts on the camera hotshoe is easily accessible when mounting the camera. It can go into a suitcase or camera case and come out ready to use. Highly recommend to do that. With the black flat surface, you can barely tell that it's tied. See my photos uploaded. Search Flikr for photos with a camera mounted in the bracket.
5. I like being able to take the camera on/off the bracket quickly. I put my existing tripod's quick release plate on the bracket and it seems to work well, except for my quick release plate has been a bit too lose and that is where it swivels. I don't know what anti-swivel plate would be needed for that, but that is a problem with the quick-release rather than with this bracket. It also adds the extra height to the bottom of the camera that I needed because of my lens.
6. **With the use of a quick-release plate** I like the the pop out support leg on the bracket. It swings in and out from the bracket very nicely and doesn't touch my 18-200 lens so it doesn't get in the way. It is useful to hold upright the whole bracket with camera and flash standing up or hold the bracket upright without the camera for easy mounting. With a thicker lens or if I am not using the quick release plate, it will hit the lens. Because it folds in flush with the side leg, just leave it collapsed, rather than removing. Not sure if an older model needed to have it removed as the previous reviewer mentioned.
7. The bracket has a screw hole (actually several) underneath to allow for mounting the bracket on a tripod. I have used the bracket with the camera on the tripod and the weight distribution is good, such that it doesn't add imbalanced weight.

The neutral:
1. The manufacturer recommends the anti-twist plates for the camera (something more to buy). They are actually pretty good at responding to emails asking for a compatible plate.
2. It does add weight to the camera system, but because it is strong and so well made, it is a worthwhile investment.
3. I haven't tried, but the arm seems to go up further for higher cameras (it includes the required allen wrench), but where it is from the factory works for my camera. I would only try it if I end up upgrading to a larger camera.

Still pending:
1. I am planning on getting two matching quick release plates one to mount between the camera and the bracket, and a second one to mount between my bracket and my tripod. With having matching plates, I theoretically should be able to remove the camera from the bracket and use hands-free and potentially mount on the tripod without having to screw-in and out from the bracket. Still researching which to get...

Description of Stroboframe Press-T Flash Rotating Bracket

The Press-T is flash-rotating bracket. It is light, compact and fast handling with swinging flash arm to keep the flash centered over the lens for both horizontal and vertical compositions. This bracket does not require the use of a cable release. The Press-T is a slightly shorter and more compact version of the Pro-T. Popular with photojournalists and other shooters who work out of a camera bag.
Among Stroboframe's lightest and fastest professional flash rotating brackets, the Press-T features a pivoting, machined flash arm that centers the flash above the lens, creating picture-perfect horizontal and vertical compositions. Unlike conventional brackets, the Press-T lets you hold the camera rather than the bracket, providing a more natural way of shooting. It also allows you to switch between horizontal and vertical compositions instantly. The solid machined aluminum construction, meanwhile, is lightweight and rigid, ensuring superior balance in the hand. Other details include an integral quick-release (QR) plate that mates to an optional QR receiver for quick tripod mounting, full compatibility with accessory battery packs or motor drives, and a nominal lens-to-flash distance of 10 inches. The Press-T, which stands 7 inches tall and weighs 11 ounces (a perfect size for camera bags), works with all Stroboframe flash mounts, anti- twist plates, and quick-release accessories.
